Today's person of the week is John Edwards. Wait ... this is not "Biggest Piece of Shit" of the week award. Seriously... you cheated on your wife. You are an ass. You cheated on your wife while she had cancer. Say goodbye to politics. I hope.
Ok, in reality the person of the week is Brett Favre. Everyone wants more Brett Favre stories. Oh ... we don't care? He is just a football player and not anyone I really care about? Oh right. I like you Brett, but seriously this was the dumbest story that got way too much attention of the last who knows how long.
The real person of the week happens to also be a football player. His name is Myron Rolle. He plays safety for the Florida State Seminoles. He also is a likely winner of the Rhodes Scholarship. He will most likely be a first round draft pick this spring. He also graduated college in two and half years. As a pre-med.
So, while balancing being one of the best football players in college he graduated a year and a half early from school. He also has enough of a resume to be a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Basically, Mr. Rolle is everything that being a student-athlete should stand for.
Sadly for a lot of high profile college athletes with dreams of professional sports college work gets pushed off the burners completely, let alone to the back burner. Mr. Rolle reminds us all that is possible to put both sports and academics on the front burner and be successful. In the days of academic scandal at his own institution, steroid abuse by athletes, and an over obsession in our country with sports Rolle serves as a role model to all athletes in the world. Not just football players. Not just college. Not just African-American. All athletes.
Here is to Mr. Rolle. Here is to him winning the Rhodes, accepting it, and then joining the NFL after a year. Live the dream. Have your cake. Eat it. Then describe the cake to millions of our youth so they may one day have and eat from that cake as well.
