(This week's titles will all be from the same amazing song ... enjoy)
Today's rant is for you local sports enthusiast. You who treat every game like a diagnosis of terminal disease. It is either "OH SHIT NO! MY LIFE IS OVER" or "THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!" Honestly, calm the hell down.
On Wednesday I witnessed one such beast. Watching a week three game ... with one other person in a student lounge. Went from screaming and cussing in anger at the television screen on a punt return to screaming and cussing with joy at the television on a rushing touchdown in about five minutes. What the hell is wrong with you?
Now I understand cheering for your favorite team. I also understand getting really excited... you know, in the playoffs or for a championship. But third game of a season against a shitty opponent? Time to calm down.
Don't even get me started on the "we" people. Don't refer to your team as "we" unless you are directly involved in day to day operations. Thanks. THEY played well.
My favorite thing in college sports is completely ripping an athlete or a team. They are college students who are not being paid. Calm down. You can complain about a coach if you want or any professional athlete you want, but leave a college (or younger) student alone. Until they cash a paycheck, leave on field performance alone. Let the coach deal with their slump, not your drunk ass. On top of it all ... there is a 95% chance you have no clue what you are talking about.
Which leads me to yelling at coaches. If your coach improved the situation of the school he is currently at from before he got there ... do not say a word about him (unless he is cheating). Obviously, things may stagnate after a few years of improvement and you may want a change. Understandable. Maybe a light fire would be fine, but remember what the situation was before that person got there. If you are a lot better off ... calm down. Seriously.
If you read this and think I am picking on people who are huge fans, I am not trying to. Just have some perspective. It isn't life and death. You can care a lot. Just remember, those athletes and coaches ... they are people. Treat them as such.
