Last summer I worked in Portland, Oregon. One of my sister's best friends lives there and we decided to get together for an evening. Her friend's owned a vegan catering company and were having a practice dinner and we thought that would be a fun thing to do. It took place in a recording studio owned by either the caterer's brother or a close friend or something like that. The cost was $20 to cover the cost of the foods and whatever else. It ended up being a bargain.
This is what I wrote on my sister's Facebook wall the day after the meal: "What did I eat for dinner with Emily? I am glad you asked ... for starters I enjoyed collared green wraps with tamarind dipping sauce, olive oil potato cakes with avocado butter and micro greens, and pesto stuffed mushrooms with a French 75 to drink. Then some potato leek soup followed by a mixed greens salad with hot mushroom oil as dressing. Champagne and beer were served with seitan medallions stuffed with hazelnut pesto and topped with a cherry-peppercorn sauce served over a bed of wild rice with roasted asparagus. Dessert was strawberry rhubarb pie and chocolate porter fudge torte covered in white chocolate mousse. I ate until I could not move for 20 dollars. It was a steal of a deal. And it was all vegan."
Other than the use of the term "steal of a deal" I completely stand by that post. It was easily the most delicious meal of my life, the desserts in particular were amazing. I am not a vegetarian, let alone vegan, but I would be vegan if I could cook as well as they did. Absolutely amazing. Now I'm hungry....
