It once was everywhere I turned. Maybe it was just getting out of college that changed it, or my entire lack of going out to "cool places" regularly has shielded me from this disease, but I no longer see this phenomenon as much as before. Either way ... thank goodness.
I, of course, am talking about people popping their collars on their polo shirts. Some people, I shall call them douchebags, went as far as to layer their polos (wearing more than one) and popping all the collars they had. They looked so ridiculous it was amazing. The best part about all of this was they weren't being on the cutting edge of coolness or being hip. They were copying a trend that had been in the Northeast United States years earlier. Way to go broseph!
I hated this trend so much that I created one of the very first facebook groups from my college (a friend e-mailed me the day it came out so I would join and he could win a battle of most friends at different schools battle with his friends). The group is entitled "Keep them Collars Down" and as of right now it has 2071 members (one joined recently, weird). Its first discussion post was October 20, 2004 ... just to put a date on when the group started. Needless to say, I have hated this trend for a long time.
The reasons why I hate this trend are multiple, but the main ones are as follows. I hate when people try too hard to look cool. Some people can wear something and it looks effortless and cool ... it fits them. Others looks like a little kid playing dress up. Everyone with a popped collar looks like an idiot trying to be cool. The people that wore their collars up can be divided into a ratio of douchebags to normal person of 19:1. Therefore, the look became associated with douchebags in my mind. Thirdly and lastly, why? I don't even like wearing polos or shirts with collars unless I am dressing up for something. So to me a popped collar would just make you look like a jackass in any area where I would wear one. I understand other people wear them more often andd that is just my prerogative. However, why not just wear a t-shirt if you are going to take a collared shirt and render the collar useless?
Maybe I just don't "get it". Maybe I am being unfair to those who rock the popped collar. Or maybe I am dead on as evidenced by this article from the Georgetown Heckler. I hope you read that because it is one of the funnier satires I have read. Even the name of the author is gold.
Regardless, I hope the trend has died amongst the people... if not, I hope it still serves as a large blinking warning sign that says "beware, douchebag approaches".
(Below my posts from now on, after I run I am going to place my workout for the day. It is mostly to keep myself honest and consistent in my running... ie so I don't slack off. Today was 1 mile warm-up (7:31), 6 half miles at pace (avg. 2:49) with half mile recovery jogs between (3:52, for 6:41 avg mile combined). Total for the day: 7 miles, 47:41, avg pace 6:49)
