Today's person of the week is Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a Nobel Peace Prize winner. She is also a prisoner in Burma. In fact, she has been a prisoner for twelve years. Her crime? She was the leader of a nationwide movement to try and end military rule. Her government has over 2,000 political prisoners currently. Amongst other crimes/atrocities depending on how you would like to view their actions.
How and why the world has not mobilized around this woman remains unknown. It is funny how we decide which countries are evil enough for us to go to war, bomb, cut off trade, etc. I do not know our current status with Burma. I hope we have an embargo at the least. Hopefully we can make Aung San Suu Kyi like the man she is most compared with: Nelson Mandela. Take a prisoner and turn them into a symbol of a government that needs to be changed. Changed for the sake of the people of Burma.
