Question: if we clarified that marriages only occur in religious ceremonies and signing your certificate for the government was a separate act for anyone, independent on gender of participants, call a civil union would this be an issue?
No one is trying to force your religion to marry two men or two women. They are just trying to get the same basic rights any man and woman can have when they legally declare themselves to be a union.
The only argument against this is is that then two friends could have a union to get insurance or what have you. A man and woman can do that now. Why can't two men or two women chat the system the same way?
I understand people not wanting gay marriage on the grounds that marriage is "between a man and a woman" because people get married in their church. I don't agree and don't care about semantics. So change the wording. See if that gets it passed. If not, this country is in a lot worse shape than I thought.
