I love my Basque culture. Maybe it is the fact I don't personally know any Basques that are not related to myself. Maybe it is because I never met my grandfather who was 100% Basque. Or it could be because they are freaking badass. You know .. any of those.
Basque culture can be summed up through the lauburu, or Basque cross. There is much debate as to its historical origin, it is widely considered to predate the Basque contact with the Roman Empire, and there are more theories than answers in everything surrounding the icon.
Because of their relative isolation, long history, and cultural whitewashing under Franco much of the Basque culture is not fully explainable or provable. Known: their language is unrelated to any language spoken in Europe and is therefore the oldest European language in use, the Basque were fine fishermen, they lived in relative autonomy for most of written history. Valid hypotheses: Basque "discovered" America before the Vikings, Basque is the only remaining indigenous European language, the lauburu not only predates Christianity but inspired the labarum.
They also invented the rubber ball. Take that.
Basically the Basque are much like GloboGym. They're better than you and they know it. However, they are not nearly as smug or evil. In fact, if they had their autonomy back they would be the most pleasant people in the world.
