Thus wailed Aphrodite in anguish-throe, As she strove to hold him back from death

The person of the week this week is Sappho. Sappho was a Greek poet considered one of the 9 great lyrical poets on antiquity. She was born on the island of Lesbos and it is from her the terms "lesbian" and "sapphic" originate. There is debate on whether Sappho was actually a homosexual or not since the only things known about her are from her poetry, most of which has now been lost.

Read more about Sappho on wikipedia. For a woman of antiquity to gain that much fame and acclaim she had to be extra amazing. Some fragments of her work can be read here.
