I'll have a pie ... apple

I have a beef with how we rate things in this world. By rating things on a numerical basis 4 stars or 10/10, etc. we imply a chance of perfection. Nothing in this world is perfect to everyone. It is subjective. Don't get me started with two thumbs for movies. Two thumbs up, I think everyone agrees two thumbs are better than one or zero, but they may not all agree that what is being given two thumbs up is good.

"Chris if you are going to complain do that on Monday, that is why I don't read you blog Monday." I know right? This isn't a rant because I have a fix.

Kind of.

Since every experience is subjective, we need to use a rating system based on another subjectivity scale. I prefer using fruits. I know it isn't perfect, for example I love strawberries and my mom hates them, so if I gave a movie a strawberry rating it would seem to imply she should hate the movie instead of love it like me. Obviously strawberries and movie choices (or anything else) are not related. What is related is that us liking or disliking them is subjective based on our personal preferences.

Thus involving a subjective measure in your rating scale, you incorporate your personal bias in the rating system, allowing others to simply judge an experience using your personal preference as a guide while keeping in mind their subjective response may not be equal for the exact same thing.

My scale of 10, where 1 is my favorite, would be:
  1. Passion fruit
  2. Strawberry
  3. Kiwi
  4. Pineapple
  5. Apple
  6. Pear
  7. Orange
  8. Cherry
  9. Banana
  10. Honey Dew
So when I tell you something is "passion fruit" you know I love it, but also realize you are taking subjective movie reviews from a guy who lists passion fruit as their favorite fruit and will factor in the fact ratings are subjective in your decision to see a movie. So if you go see it and think it is your tenth fruit you don't get mad at me because I rated it with my subjectiveness shown and I don't get offended you hated something I loved because I know it was subjective.

I know it isn't perfect and most people probably have no problem with 4 stars or 2 thumbs up, but I enjoy this way. Plus you may get to learn the favorite fruits of some friends while you are at it. Nothing is better than being in public and just talking about people in front of them saying "Rick? I'd say Kiwi" and a friend replying "I agree, for me he's watermelon" and Rick just being confused. It is better if I am calling people "honey dew" because it sounds like a pet name, but means I hate them.

What are your fruit rating scales?
