I am Idiot and so can you

"Why I am an idiot ... and why I blame America" by Whale Cancer

One of the things I would love to be is bilingual. While there is still plenty of time for me to make this dream a reality, it should be said that America really let me down in this department. Language learning skills are best in young children and during those peak years I was given no foreign language training.

Why? Because until recently Americans saw learning foreign language as stupid, because everyone important spoke English. I am sure there are more reasons, most of them pertaining to the social dominance of America, but that is the main one.

While this seemed true, and still does since English is the language of science and the internet, it doesn't incorporate so many other things. The cultural and social importance of knowing other languages continues to grow as the world "shrinks". Not only that but the better you can communicate in other languages, the better you will be able to find jobs.

I want to learn other languages because I love to travel and that would make my travel experiences less touristy since I could venture off the English path. More than that, I would love to one day work in a foreign country and how can I help patients if I can only speak English? I don't want to rely on a translator.

So why am I an idiot? There are children in Europe who speak 5+ languages fluently. I, as you can tell by reading this, struggle with the English language: my first and only language.

Maybe one day I will be able to rewrite this blog post in multiple languages. Or at least, better English.
