Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding

I am going to be lame this week and name some fairly famous people as the people of the week. What is more, they are famous simply for being athletes. On top of that, one of these two athletes once was arrested for a DUI. When they were underage.

Regardless, the feats of Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt need to be mentioned for their utter ridiculousness.

Unless you are oblivious to the world you know that Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at these games. Along the way he set seven new world records. He also had quite a flair for the dramatic out touching an opponent by .01 seconds in his seventh final in a race he had no business winning. Overall a very impressive victory.

Bolt on the other hand won the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the 400 meter relay (also known as the 4x100 relay). All of these in world record times. Two of those world records were over a decade old, the 200 record having previously thought to be nearly unbreakable for another generation or two. He also set the 100 record while visibly slowing up and celebrating over the last 15-20 meters.

So which is more impressive? As far as total athleticism they are fairly equal achievements. Phelps dominates a pool as well as Bolt dominates the sprint track.

For sheer endurance .. Phelps takes the cake. He swam a sick number of total races and came through in all of them. Bolt had an exhausting Olympics, but nothing to that extent.

For dominance ... the win goes to Bolt. He simply destroyed the competition in everything he did. He had opponents in awe. He broke decade old world records. He was so fast that normal celebrating seemed unnecessary and immature because he won by so much time.

So which was better? Phelps or Bolt? As a runner I want to say Bolt ... and if he ever did a 100, 200, 400 gold medal Olympics he would be a clear favorite. However, I give Phelps the nod simply because going 8 for 8 is ridiculous. He had a little luck, sure, but to come through in the clutch that many times is amazing. Bolt was 3 for 3 with no realistic shot to even try to do a fourth event, so it is like punishing him for his sport. Let me wrap up by saying, Michael Phelps was not the most dominant athlete of the games, but he was the most impressive.
