I found this article on what you carry in your wallet pretty interesting. Evidently, studies show that people are more likely to spend money that is broken up into smaller amounts. That is a horrible way to say, you are more likely to spend the $100 in your wallet if it is in the form of many small bills rather than a single $100 bill.
My common sense says this is right because whenever I have singles or fives in my wallet I seem to spend them more frivolously. Sure, I'll buy that little thing I don't want or need. I actually rarely spend a $100 if I have one because I feel embarrassed asking someone to break the large bill.
The way I keep spending down is to not carry cash at all. The things I use my debit/credit cards for are generally purchases I need to make: bills, meals, groceries, etc. If I constantly had cash on me, I would use it to buy stupid impulse purchases. Not that I cannot do that online...
